McClarty Expresses 'Deep Regret' At Claudy Job Losses
|
Ulster Unionist East Londonderry Assembly member, David McClarty, has voiced his “deep regret” at the news that more than 100 jobs are set to go at the Marks and Spencer Zip Clothing plant in Claudy.
In a statement, Mr McClarty said: “I deeply regret the news that so many jobs are set to go. The impact of today’s announcement will be a significant blow to the local economy and will affect households in Foyle and in my own constituency.
“This blow to the textiles sector in the North West heaps more pressure on an important local industry which was already reeling from the loss of 175 jobs at Adria in Strabane earlier this month.”
He added: “I hope that the company will be successful in its redeployment of staff. But I also trust that government will be pro-active, not only in its support for those who face redundancy, but also for the region’s textiles industry which is in desperate need of the kind of assistance that could provide stability in the longer term.” |
