MyBiography

Councillor David McClarty, the Ulster Unionist Party’s Chief Whip in the Northern Ireland Assembly, served on the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committee and the Environment Committee in the previous administration.

The Coleraine man remains one of the most active politicians where inward investment is concerned and has established numerous contacts at home and abroad during his time as an MLA. He has been involved in several initiatives aimed at attracting investment to the region and has been a leading figure in the regeneration success of the Waterside area of Coleraine as a member of the West Bann Development Group.

A Freeman of the City of London, Councillor McClarty, married with two sons, has a deep interest in education and sits on the board of governors at Christie Primary School in Coleraine and Coleraine Academical Inst.

He worked in his brother’s insurance business based in Limavady and Coleraine for many years before being successfully elected to Stormont in 1998.

Elected to Coleraine Borough Council in 1989, Councillor McClarty held the post of Mayor from 1993 to 1995.

Keenly interested in the Arts, he is a member of Ballywillan Drama Group and has regularly appeared in local amateur theatrical productions. Much of his spare time is involved in helping community groups and charities raise funds through concerts at which he acts as MC.
