Councillor David McClarty, the
Ulster Unionist Party’s Chief Whip in the Northern
Ireland Assembly, served on the Enterprise, Trade and
Investment Committee and the Environment Committee in
the previous administration.
The
Coleraine man remains one of the most active politicians
where inward investment is concerned and has established
numerous contacts at home and abroad during his time
as an MLA. He has been involved in several initiatives
aimed at attracting investment to the region and has
been a leading figure in the regeneration success of
the Waterside area of Coleraine as a member of the West
Bann Development Group.
A
Freeman of the City of London, Councillor McClarty,
married with two sons, has a deep interest in education
and sits on the board of governors at Christie Primary
School in Coleraine and Coleraine Academical Inst.
He
worked in his brother’s insurance business based
in Limavady and Coleraine for many years before being
successfully elected to Stormont in 1998.
Elected
to Coleraine Borough Council in 1989, Councillor McClarty
held the post of Mayor from 1993 to 1995.
Keenly
interested in the Arts, he is a member of Ballywillan
Drama Group and has regularly appeared in local amateur
theatrical productions. Much of his spare time is involved
in helping community groups and charities raise funds
through concerts at which he acts as MC.
