Vital Services Closures in Portrush & Portstewart

I am disappointed and concerned to learn of closures of important services across NI.  Over the weekend, my constituency has learnt of imminent closures of both banks and police stations.

Northern Bank

The closure of two Northern Bank branches in Portstewart and Portrush are a huge blow to the local people.  Whilst I am satisfied that Northern Bank will facilitate a smooth transition of customers to the Coleraine branch, I feel the closures will impact greatly on the local people of the seaside towns.

I appreciate we are living in an age where online and electronic banking is fast becoming the norm and of course physical branches are less sustainable when there is a cheaper, faster alternative.

Many people, however, still rely on a physical bank to take care of their financial business.  Many people prefer and are more comfortable speaking to a friendly face in branch.

Particularly in Portrush and Portstewart, with its large population of older people, the presence of a bank is convenient and necessary for those who are not confident with new technology or indeed cannot make the travel arrangements to Coleraine.

It is a disappointing sign of the times, fortunately, no job losses will occur as a result of the closures.

Police Stations

The closure of many police stations across Northern Ireland is another consequence of the wielding axe that has characterised 2011 and undoubtedly will continue into 2012.  I agree with the comments made by the police that the community is better served by active officers on the ground rather than static buildings.  Police stations, however, are integrated within our communities; they provide a sense of security and a deterrent simply by just being there.

I am more than concerned to learn of the closure of the police station in Portrush.  The station currently serves Northern Ireland’s premier tourist area.  When thousands of people descend onto Portrush and Portstewart in the summer, the absence of a police station will leave tourists and the area without a definite point of police contact should they need it.  Police on the beat are great - if you can find them.  An open station guarantees that you can.  I appeal to the PSNI to reconsider the consequences, particularly in places that require a station.
