East Londonderry, your heart charity needs you to show your red side Created by Claire Sugden in 08/02/2012 16:03:35
- Wear Red Day Friday 24 February 2012-
February is Heart Month and British Heart Foundation (BHF) Northern Ireland and David McClarty MLA are asking local people to join Wear Red Day on Friday 24 February 2012 and to follow the BEAT code for simple steps to a healthier heart.
In Heart Month, BHF Northern Ireland encourages people across the country to think about their own hearts and the hearts of those around them. Your heart charity also needs local people to get involved with Wear Red Day, and raise vital funds for the charity’s life-saving work.
By wearing red like David on Wear Red Day and raising money, you will help BHF Northern Ireland to save lives through pioneering research, patient care, campaigning for change and by providing vital information.
Local Assembly man, David McClarty said: If you only look after one heart this February, make it your own. People, myself included, often take heart health for granted. We only realise the need to look after our hearts when something goes wrong. You do not need to dramatically change your lifestyle. Small changes can make a huge difference. The BHF’s BEAT code encourages us to Be active, Eat Healthy, Avoid Smoking & Take a lifestyle check. Personally, I try to walk daily, eat better and I gave up smoking a number of years ago. I admit it can be difficult to adjust, but it gets easier and I feel much better for it. These small changes are much preferable to the alternative.
It is a common misperception that heart disease is more common in men than women when in fact it kills 1 in 3 women, as well as 1 in 3 men and kills three times more women than breast cancer₁. Funds raised during Heart Month can support BHF Northern Ireland to help over 75,000 people in Northern Ireland currently living with heart disease.
